OLW November

So, for the past 11 months I have been following along with Ali Edwards and her One Little Word class.

 

I surprised myself by being able to stick with it this long. I am famous for signing up for a class, getting all inspired and excited, but then fizzling out before the end of it. Actually, the enthusiasm doesn't run out,but rather I usually run out of time, get overwhelmed and discouraged and give up...ever happen to you?

Anyway, I have stuck with this one. I think it is the fact that it is only one project per month. I can do that.

The challenge this month was to talk about what my chosen word has done for me. The word I chose is REALIZE (as in 'make it happen', 'just do it' and 'get it done'). As explained above, I have issues with getting it done.

If I had to put my finger on it, I would say that my real issue is trying to take on too much. I want to do all the projects and crafts and classes. I do. I have no lack of motivation or creative blocks. I overflow with ideas. But working full-time outside of the home limits my creative time.

My OLW for 2011 has helped me through this. Whenever I felt like abandoning a project because I had the idea for starting a new one, I heard a little voice reminding me to 'just do it' and 'get it done'... REALIZE the things you have started. It was a gentle push. And I was okay with it.

Overall, I finished more projects than I ever have (except for the Canmore Condo mini album). But more importantly, I took a closer look at what was realistic and manageable. My word made me assess my expectations of myself and what was actually possible to REALIZE. 

So thank you, Ali Edwards, for the challenges you provided for me every month which allowed me to finish things and more importantly, become a little more realistic.

 

Perhaps that should be my OLW for 2012...REALISTIC!

September OLW Blog Hop

So, here is my One Little Word project for September.

 

This month we were to choose a battle to surrender. Something that our word stirred up, but that has not materialized, that we have come to terms with and decided that is not worth the struggle right now. For me, that is writing. And I am okay with it.

We were challenged to pick a battle worth fighting for. Something that our OLW has prompted that we may not have yet followed through on. Something that we are now facing with intention after deeming it worth the battle.

My battle worth fighting for is exercise. Back in May, I set a goal to lose 10 pounds. It is not that I am overweight. I just need to maintain my health. I have back issues that have lead to some pretty severe migraines. By doing regular exercise, I will keep my muscles toned, which will keep my spine in alignment, which will keep my hip from going out, which will allow me to avoid unnecessary pain and discomfort. (Wow, I sound old).

 

I am fighting this battle by tracking my progress. I have chosen to take on Jillian Michaels and her 30 Day Shred. I have done it in the past, but let the routine slip. So, I am re-starting my 30 days...with intention. 

This is the power that my word REALIZE (as in, Just Do It!, Get It Done!) is doing for me!

OLW Blog Hop

So, another month has come to an end and this means another month of focusing on my One Little Word!

 

I have to admit that I skipped right over July's assignment due to being out of town for most of the month. I do intend on completing the assignment, but do not have it ready to share with you right now. 

However, I jumped right back in with the August prompt. This assignment was simply to take a self-portrait and include a little love on yourself. This was a photo I had taken of myself in Tulsa this summer. I simply added the words and little camera in Photoshop before printing out the pic.

I also wrote a little letter to myself and included it with my pic in a homemade envelope.

I used little velcro circles to be able to open and close the envelope.

I must say, this project has really caused me to focus on my word for this year. Every time I want to just let things go, I hear that little voice saying REALIZE it...make it happen! It is really motivating to have a focus like this. This word has changed me.

July OLW Blog Hop

 So, we are now halfway through this year-long project. It's hard to believe.

This month, Ali Edwards gave us an assignment where we had to get our hands dirty! She wanted us to get out of our heads, recommit to our word (mine is REALIZE...as in "Just Do It!") and get messy with our hands. She also challenged us to use layers while creating.

Here is my first layer...

1. Stamped image repeated (Stampin' Up)
2. Pattern tissue adhered with gel medium
3. Painted with pink acrylic paint
4. Marker around perimeter + square patterned paper (Stampin' Up) with roughed edges
5. Decorative tape found at Michaels
6. Wood effect stamp (Stampin' Up)
7. Grey acrylic paint circles
8. Butterfly image used as mask with Glimmer Spray (Tattered Angels)
9. Red stamped alphabet (Studio G)

Here is the second layer...

1. Added a shipping tag (office supply store)
2. Embossed pink arrow
3. Here I messed up the painted card, so I replaced it with an inked one + envelope from aged paper
4. Chipboard 'C' painted with red acrylic paint
5. Camera stamp (Imaginisce)
6. Stamped mini flowers (Stampin' Up)
7. Letter stamps to spell my OLW...REALIZE
8. Stamped sentiment found at Michaels
9. Typewriter stamp, cut out and mounted with pop dots

 

And layer three is the final product...

 

1. Stamped words "go girl" (as encouragement to myself to keep going!)
2. Letter stickers saying 'do it' (Basic Grey)
3. Heart punch (EK Success) as the tab to hold envelope closed + baker's twine (and a secret note of encouragement to myself inside the envelope!)
4. Glitter glue on the 'C' (not easily visible here)
5. Red embossed heart + rhinestone on flash
6. Trimmed butterfly stamp (Stampin' Up)
7. Nothing added
8. Button adhered in center
9. Nothing added

 

This month's project was a welcomed change from the writing that has been a strong part of the past month's projects. I love doing this messy sort of thing, but often don't make the time. This month, I really reflected on how I am doing with my word...what I have already accomplished and what I still need to do within the next six months.

June OLW Blog Hop

 

Welcome once again, to an exciting blog hop from the One Little Word class offered by Ali Edwards on the Big Picture Classes website.

This month, our task was to write down our tasks/mission/goal/objective/thoughts/stuff to tackle related to our word. Since my word is REALIZE, this was easy for me. I simply needed to list more of the things that I have intended to do for some time and track the completion of them!

 

I still have not yet been able to create a new blog banner. My difficulty is in determining the size that the banner must be in order to fit in the space! I have done the 'hit and miss' thing and missed over and over... a little too short, a little too long... aarrgggh!

I did break down and sign up for another class though. This one is Blogging for Scrapbookers at shimelle.com. I haven't started yet, but hopefully by July's blog hop I will have a new banner for you to see!

And speaking of Shimelle, I encourage you to check out this post, as she is inviting us to use our Girl Power to help others.

I've not been able to do as much writing this month, compared to April, but I did get ambitious with my planters on the front step... and that makes me happy.

The facing page on the right hand side looks like this. I just used assorted stamps that I have picked up here and there at Michaels. It is the back of last month's assignment.

Overall, I am please with my progress in this class and am totally up for the challenge in the months to come!

May OLW Blog Hop

So, I took a different focus this month.

 

I have found my One Little Word, REALIZE, to be very flexible. Throughout this journey so far, I have used my word to really get done, or accomplish those things that I have had an intention to do, but just not completed.

January was all about choosing and defining my word. 

February was all about organizational tasks that needed to be attacked.

March was all about my writing and realizing the intention I have had to write a novel. I made great progress by focusing my efforts on it for the entire month!

 

This month, April, I used my word to focus in on my blog. I started this blog almost 2 years ago. At that time I knew nothing about blogging. I chose a simple template. I stuck to a very basic look and feel. My goal was simply to share my thoughts and my life through stories and pictures. I had family who were interested in seeing what we were up to and I thought this would be a great way to share with them.

Following Ali Edwards has made me take notice of documenting real life. I am a scrapbooker, so I already enjoy the capture and retelling of our stories. Blogging has just become a platform for sharing these moments with not only my family, but others with similar interests in scrapbooking and blogging.

My readership has grown over the past two years and I am so humbled. There are so many talented scrapbookers and bloggers out there. I have a lot to learn from their example and their expertise. 

 

This month, I tried to REALIZE a better blog for my readers. I looked into what people are interested in hearing about. I started conversations with other bloggers. I researched how to add new widgets and such. I am learning about html and coding to better my blog. I joined Twitter to increase traffic to my blog, although I have not been very efficient with this yet!

Most of the improvements I made to my blog this month are behind-the-scenes. You may not have noticed them. It was more about my learning and how to augment the functioning of my blog. One goal I was hoping to REALIZE this month, was to put up a new customized banner on my blog. Unfortunately, I did not accomplish this task in April. I am still trying to figure out how to get the right size image before uploading it!

All in all, I am please with what I REALIZED this month in regards to my blog. I have learned a lot and I am still learning.

Blog Hop Coming!

Just Joining Twitter

So, I have just joined the world of Twitter!

Sure, I am a bit late, but I am not one to jump into things without careful research and purpose.

Anyway, here I am. Ready to say my piece and make some sort of impact in this ever-growing world of technological advancements. 

Joining Twitter also ticks off another item on my REALIZE list.

Just a warning... this is the first of a few changes that you will begin to see on my blog. I am doing some revamping that I have wanted to do for quite some time. Now is the time!

April OLW Blog Hop

 

So, a great big welcome to all visitors today...the new and the faithful!

 

Today, I am a participant in the April Blog Hop for fellow students of the One Little Word online class instructed by Ali Edwards at Big Picture Classes. Each month, we are given an assignment that has something to do with the word that we have chosen for the year 2011. For the month of March, our assignment was to TAKE ACTION with our word and see what we could do!

 

My word is REALIZE...as in, make it happen, accomplish, see it through, get it done! I have many ideas and inspirations, but seem to have trouble making them happen. This class has been instrumental already in helping me to 'get some of my projects done'!

Because my OLW already implies taking action, I have been busy doing just that! However, what was helpful this month, was Ali asking us to focus on one particular area for the entire month. For a few years now, I have had the itch to write a book. After teaching elementary school for most of my career, I can safely say that I have read my fair share of children's books. All that reading put the dream in my heart to write my own book. This month, I set some personal goals in regards to my writing and was pleased with the progress that I have made.

I really feel like taking this One Little Word is making a difference for me. OLW Blog Hop

Today I am participating in a Blog Hop for fellow students of the One Little Word online class instructed by Ali Edwards at Big Picture Classes. Each month, we are given an assignment that has something to do with the word that we have chosen for the year 2011. 

My word is REALIZE...as in, make it happen, accomplish, see it through, get it done! I have many ideas and inspirations, but seem to have trouble making them happen. This class has been instrumental already in helping me to 'get some of my projects done'!

Here is a little more info on my word choice.

Once I had chosen my word, I wanted to make my binder pretty! The photo at the top of my post is my decorated binder cover.

Here is my self-portrait to begin the year and the project.

The January assignment  required us to define our word using cards printed from the class materials by Ali Edwards. It was such a fun project to work with. You can check out my full assignment here.

This Blog Hop is all about posting our February assignment, which was to take pictures of things that help to explain our word. Since my word is REALIZE (make it happen), I took photos of the things that have been on my list forever and that I have actually realized and brought into being! 

I actually have a full post about the bottom picture of me and My Tiffany necklace.

On the back of each of the images I have written what it is that I made happen.

Here is the two images side-by-side to help match up the words with the pics (although they are reversed).

What a feeling... to get things done that have been nagging me in the back of my mind! As you can see, they are not all scrapbooking related items. Some are house organizing or decorating things that needed to be done since our home renovation last year. Many are scrapbooking projects (like "A Year of Letters"), though, and I hope to attack more of those in the coming month. I will keep you updated on those...

Today, Ali will be posting the March assignment, so I am excited to see what it will be and get working on it! Watch for another Blog Hop at the end of the month with a post on the March assignment.
